Organized by the Art History Institute (IHA), of the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, the First International Congress Art and Gender? will take place on October 22, at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and on October 23/24, at the Arpad Szenes Vieira da Silva Foundation in Lisbon.
Bringing together 44 researchers from 11 countries and 48 institutions, the congress encompasses several artistic and scientific areas and aims to present an overview of current scholarship regarding Gender Studies, mainly in Visual and Performing Arts. Creating an opportunity for encounter between the normative and the alternative, the objective of the congress is to bring together a wide range of studies and practices on Art and Gender, fill gaps created by oblivion, promote dialogue among researchers from diverse backgrounds, as well as encourage reflection and intercultural debate through its conceptual and iconographic context from Antiquity to contemporaneity. The keynote speakers are Professor Nancy G. Heller (University of The Arts, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA), author of Women Artists and Why a painting is like a pizza and Camille Morineau who curated the exhibition elles @ centrepompidou, 2009-2010.
